THIS IS MY SON...
Happy New Year and Happy Epiphanytide!
As we have entered the new year and returned to our daily routines, the excitement of the Christmas season is fading. Many have taken down their Christmas trees, decorations, and lights, putting them to bed for another year. We feel this at church, as well.
One of the last hymns that seems to end Christmastide is We Three Kings. It is often sung on the Feast of Epiphany, where wisemen from the east followed a star, not knowing what to expect only that it would bring them to one identified as a King, God, and Sacrifice. This revelation marks the beginning of the Season of Epiphany. The Baptism of the Lord is the first public revelation of the Divinity of Jesus. It is there that a voice came down from heaven saying, ‘This is my Son, the beloved, with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17). The season culminates with the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, where God speaks to Peter, John, and James, saying, “This is my Son, the beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5) The Season of Epiphany is bookended with God speaking to us, pointing to Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.
As our secular culture has resumed its rhythm, we continue to celebrate the Incarnation reflecting on the many ways He revealed himself to those in scripture but to us today. I pray that we continue to seek Jesus as the wise men did all those years ago, and to respond to God’s call to us to listen to Jesus – His beloved Son.
Blessings to you in this season of Epiphanytide,
Rev. Elizabeth
